Greetings,
I have a friend that is having trouble with some web pages loading
slowly but we set up another user account in WinXP and that works fine.
Here is the background.
Computer:
AthlonXP 3500
2 Gb RAM
XP Pro with SRP2
Wireless Broadband at 512 kps
McAfee Security Suite with SiteAdvisor uninstalled, firewall on then off
Firefox 2.0.0.4
IE 6
Situation:
1) She can go to her gmail account, loads fine, but when she tries to
reply to a message it slows and may take 5 - 10 minutes to load page.
2) www.qvc.com loads homepage but if you click on any tab like Jewelry
it takes several minutes for it to load.
3) Exactly the same sites, sypmtoms and situation when using IE6 or Firefox
4) I set up a new user account (administrator level) and it worked fine.
5) Cleared cache and history - no change.
6) No other computer on network (all with McAfee Security Suite
installed) have trouble with these sites.
7) Anti-virus updated and ran.
8) She had used proxies to access an university library site but these
are currently disabled.
Personally I'm tempted to just reformat and reinstall but she has a ton
of student and class related software and data on this machine and
insufficient backup protocol...like rarely. I figure I would miss some
data on some obscure (to me) program.
Any suggestions happily recieved. Thank you.
Tom
